Gilmanton Iron Works is the eastern village of Gilmanton, named for the bog iron that was smelted here in the late 1700s, and it sits on the outlet of Crystal Lake where Route 140 crosses the Suncook River. The village center is a cluster of 1800s houses, a church, and a general store. Around Crystal Lake and along the roads toward Alton are camps from the 1930s through the 1960s, many winterized, and back in the woods are 1980s and 1990s capes and colonials on wells and septic.
The Suncook starts here, and in the Mother's Day storm of May 2006 it left its banks all the way downstream, famously cutting a new channel in Epsom. Up here in the headwaters the flooding was smaller but real, and cellars along the river and around the lake outlet filled from the ground up. Winter is the bigger risk in the Iron Works. Camps on Crystal Lake sit at 900 feet and more, the cold settles in the valley, and the February 2023 arctic blast split pipes in cottages that had been fine for fifty winters. The December 2008 ice storm left the village dark for most of a week.
